Mustache March Photo Shoot Today

Just one FINAL reminder (I know you’re glad to hear that) about the photo shoot for Mustache March. I’ll be in the studio from 2pm to 7pm. That’s a rough timeline, actually. I have class in there from 2-4:30pm, but will be able to shoot portraits as they come. After that, I’ll just be hanging around. This is a one-day shoot, so if you miss out, you miss out. Anyone with a mustache is welcome to participate (including the ladyfolk).

Open Studio Reminder

Hey, just wanted to remind students in the Open Studio Exhibition that you need to drop off your work tomorrow (3/31/08) or Tuesday (4/1/08) no later than 5pm at Justin Ayars office, the room next to the mailroom in the basement of building A. He will be in and out of the office both days, but work can be left near his cubicle. He is located in the group of offices right of the mailroom. Make sure you have the two forms attached to your artwork. If you have any specific questions, you can contact Justin on his cell at 404-906-3625.

Monster Post

Normally I wouldn’t try to cram a ton of stuff into one post, but I really just don’t have the patience for covering all these things separately, and with the attention they deserve, so I’ll try to cover them in order of importance (roughly). Here goes:

  1. Denise Lira’s show was recently profiled on a local blog. The review praised the show saying, “Through her installation, the space became activated in two ways: honored for its native raw utility and transformed into something utterly otherwordly. … [Her show] has so far been the best art event of the year.” Congrats, Denise!
  2. Our own Rich Meade was also recently featured, this time in the form of an interview (and cover photo) on a new online art magazine called Liz Corday. Check out the interview in their first issue!
  3. For those of you interested in the Sam Taylor-Wood video pieces we saw when she spoke at the High Museum this past fall, check out a decent selection of her full-length video pieces on Ubuweb.
  4. Photos from the Spring 2008 Grad Pot Luck are now online. They are abundantly mediocre, thanks to myself.
  5. Pause | to begin is a “photographically driven publication” which you should submit work to. They will conduct a studio visit if you are among the chosen, and you might be published. Charles Altshul, John Paul Caponigro and Joyce Tenneson are advisers for the project. Deadline for submissions is 4/1/08 and the fee is $35.
  6. I’m going to submit work to the following two places, among others: Museum of Contemporary Photography (in Chicago) and Blue Sky Gallery (in Portland). Nothing coming up, just thought I’d mention them, since, you know, you’re totally wanting to get your work out there now. Yeah.
  7. Oh, make some other suggestions for places to submit in the comments.

Mexico City Workshop

Hey guys,

I wanted to attend this workshop in Mexico City in June and they are offering a great “bring a friend deal.” Check this out and if anyone wants to “be my friend” let me know so I can budget for the workshops. Kael Alford will also be teaching at this. Additionally, I’ve been following these courses for a few years and this is a GREAT deal for a workshop. (Much less expensive than the Maine or Santa Fe workshops.)

Foundry Photo Workshop - Bring a Friend Discount

Just wanted to announce that the Foundry Photojournalism Workshop has decided to offer a bring-a-friend tuition discount from now (Feb 20) until June, 2008. We have a great group of students already, but would like to affect as many photographers as possible for good, so we’ve decided to sweeten the pot a bit.

It’s simple - if you and a friend register and pay tuition at the same time (note this on your registration & paypal payment), you each get $100 off the price of tuition. So its $400 per person, $800 for two. And you’ve got a friend to travel and split rooms with.

The lodging list, created by our own LSer Kirsten Luce, will be released and posted very shortly; Brian Frank (on LS) is in the process of renting a house for photographers, so you can contact him if you’re interested.

There is still room left on the Centurion Course for those who are interested.

Friday Night Gallery Walk

Per Rebecca’s suggestion, we will be meeting at the 5th Floor (building C) computer lab tonight at 7:30pm to head to several openings, including those at Castleberry Hill. It is strongly suggested that new students ride with (or at least follow) old students.

Dinner to follow.

Hooray for Trees!

Katie Chapman notified me about this opportunity:

Trees Atlanta is holding a silent auction.  The contact person is Jill McAdaragh (jmcadaragh@gmail.com). The theme of the show is trees/ nature, so they would like it if the photographs went with the theme. They would accept any size photograph and the final presentation of the piece is optional (matting/framing). I attached the donation form with should be turned in along with an artist’s bio and any type of promotional pieces you want them to put out.

Photoshop, on the Web

Adobe has released Photoshop Express, a web-based version of Photoshop. Basic retouching, 2GB online backup, and some kind of gallery thing. Interesting.

Community Outreach

On April 19, SCAD Pro Initiative will host a group of twenty minority children from the I Have A Dream Foundation.  Through a partnership with a local non-profit, the Youth Photography Program, these children will spend the day learning about basic photography, viewing historical images, and briefly practicing what they learned on the roof of SCAD.

If anyone is interested in helping out, leave a comment and I will get you more details in the upcoming weeks. Your main duties will simply be to help the children compose their shots during the activity portion and conversation/mentoring the remainder of the time.

For anyone who doesn’t know Sam Hensley, he’s a graduating senior at SCAD in Savannah. Rebecca and I both know him from the 2007 Summer Trip to New York City.

Reminder

For the new folks and those that just don’t know anything about Mustache March, a few notes:

  • The Photo Shoot is all day, March 31, 2008.
  • The photos taken will be, at the very least, included in poster (and possibly a calendar) which will be available for purchase.
  • Men are expected to have authentic facial hair growth unless verified by doctor’s note that facial hair is an utter impossibility.
  • Women are welcome to participate and may utilize fake mustaches.
  • Beards and goatees ARE NOT MUSTACHES.

Local Blog Reviews “SCAD on the Edge”

Jonathan Bouknight is an artist in Atlanta who writes about area shows on his blog Local Ephemera. He dropped by the “SCAD on the Edge” show and gave an interesting—albeit, less than glowing—review of the work and the show overall. I’d say it’s a good read worth your perusal: “On the Street”
