2 commentsCannonball Press: A Simple Recipe
Review by Rebecca Stern
On a Thursday night with so many events to choose from in the Atlanta area, I chose to attend the Cannonball Press Lecture entitled, Woodcutology at the Savannah College of Art and Design Printmaking Workshop. I was greeted by a crowd of people eager to listen to a PowerPoint presentation by two men who had been extremely productive for the past week in the workshop. As Richard Gere, department chair of Printmaking, so eloquently stated, “these guys are here to create a stir of creativity.” Hopefully their creativity will provide the impetus for the students to be creative and productive.
These two fun-loving guys are in love with what they do and want to spread the word and inspire others. Martin Mazorra and Mike Houston are the two creators and owners of Cannonball Press, a small, well known press in Brooklyn, New York. In their small space, Martin and Mike, along with many other artists whom they represent, create magnificent woodcut prints. The prints are sold at reasonable prices that the average person can afford, without breaking the bank. The artists at Cannonball Press create work that is political, humorous, entertaining, religious and educational. Their “recipe” for success, appropriate for all artists is, “a down home dish that is tasty hot or cold.”
The lecture, overflowing with people, provided an insight into the philosophical practices of Mike and Martin. Their passion, beliefs, and values provided a solid ground for paving the road for a successful career. Their work and the work of the artists they represent is exciting and their craftsmanship is worth checking out. Also their prices are still a bargain and remarkable when compared to a market in which artwork can be sold for thousands to millions of dollars. They are trying to create a market where artwork is affordable for the commoner. Their works sell for as little as $25.00 and are worth much more than that.

No commentsArt Basel Miami 2007… are you going?
This is a notice for everyone interested in going to Art Basel Miami in December. Art Basel Miami will take place December 6-9, as well as Photo Miami and the array of other satellite art fairs. We don’t have a place to stay, and we’re working on it. There is a small chance that we’ll be able to crash for cheap somewhere, but worst-case scenario is we’ll have to find a hotel room either in Miami or a nearby city. I think that might be difficult considering what’s going on and where we’ll be.
So it’s important to make your decision very soon. Essentially, if you’re not sure, we’ll have to say you’re on your own for lodging, as we won’t be able to make additional space for anyone who decides to go at the last minute. We will probably be gone December 5-10, and we’ll be carpooling.
If you know you’re going, without a doubt, for sure, then either leave a comment on this post or e-mail me. So far, I know for sure that Dave Jones, Eric Hancock, Tony Showah and myself are going. I know some of you expressed interest yesterday in the Hub, so please throw your name in if you’ve decided. Thanks!
2 commentsChoptober arrives in 5 Days

In case you have forgotten, the first annual Choptober will begin in just five short days. Hoping to build on the rousing success of moustache march, all men and women are encouraged to grow some awesome sideburns or “chops”. So stop shaving now. Only time will tell if we look more or less creepy than we did with the moustaches.
2 commentsCALLING!….FOR ENTRIES!
Some good stuff to enter perhaps:
The Deadline is Oct. 5 for submitting work prints, click on the link for specifics. Julian Cox and Jane Jackson are the jurors and the cost is $25, the theme is “A New Outlook on the World” and the works will be displayed in a hospital. (So probably nothing ultra-violent or overtly political i.e. Dave Jones)
The deadline is Oct. 6, the juror is Katherine Ware, Curator of Photographs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. You have to be a member, student memberships are $35.

Tonight at Blue Tower
The big printmaking show tonight at Blue Tower Gallery is gonna’ be great. That’s why you’re going to meet us at the school to go… why? Because you need a code to get in the gate. We’re carpooling. It runs 7pm-12am, but we’ll be meeting at the school around 7:45pm.
Any questions, call me or leave a comment here.
And here’s the code and directions to the gallery: Blue Tower Gallery

2 comments“The Art Thief” by Noah Charney

My friend, Noah just published a novel called “The Art Thief.” Here’s what he says:
My first novel, The Art Thief, is in stores now. You can find it in any Barnes & Noble, near the front of the store, in the New Arrivals section.
If it interests you to grab a copy, please do, and tell your friends and family. The sales in the first month are the most important, so it would be incredibly helpful, if you are interested.
I also have a book tour Oct 1-12. Go to www.noahcharney.com and you can find the whole tour schedule.
There’s also a video review of the novel at http://www.elladrondearte.com/

Hey guys,
For those surfing photoawesome.com and just clicking around on stuff, check out my newest editorial at www.allhiphop.com. It’s about the current Jena 6 situation in Louisiana.
Jena 6 and Hip-Hop: How Long Will it Last?
It’s not monumental but it’s definitely political. Read the comments below. Some of them make you wonder about the English language all together. Mine is wonderful.
