Denise at Hagedorn Special

Denise Lira-Ratinoff is giving an artist talk specially for SCAD on Thursday August 14 from 6-8 p.m. at the Hagedorn Foundation Gallery. She’s put up a fine show. Her dedication to her craft is extraordinary and her talk is worth a listen. Here’s an interview I did with Denise for Art Relish. I believe she’ll be moving on soon so you should all come out to see her show, hear her speak, and wish her well.

PhotoAwesome (likes) WhoIsCarla

From what felt like a frenzied weekend of parties and cookouts, I found some time to shoot at Jason Kofke’s “Everything Will Be OK” at Arthouse and PhotoAwesome at Blue Tower. It’s not a bunch of photos but enough to laugh. Beware, I’m all over the pictures. Yes… Check them out before everyone graduates. Who’s gonna do the PhotoAwesome upkeep now?

Doppelgängers?

In addition to my normal photo-commentary-blog reading, I’ve been doing research for my thesis, which many of you know is about my wife Stacy (we got married four years ago at the end of this month, btw). In the past couple of months, I’ve come across several photographers doing some thematically similar work, such as Kate Hutchinson, who has been photographing her husband-to-be in a series with the best title ever, “Why Am I Marrying Him?“.

I then happened across the work of Jason Landry, an MFA candidate in photography in Boston, who is shooting his wife, Anne, for a series called “Close to Home“.

But tonight was the kicker. I was checking up with Museum School student Shane Lavalette’s blog /J (which you should all be reading) when I found his post about the work of Eric Weeks. Weeks has been photographing his wife Stacy, whom he married four years ago in a series titled “World Was in the Face of the Beloved“.

I swear, this is just getting ridiculous. Or maybe I’m just onto something.

Congratulations to Addison Hill

Congratulations to Addison Hill (SCAD-Atlanta) for being selected as the ‘web winner’ for Fine Art / Personal work in the 5th Annual PDNEDU student photo contest – several other SCAD students were also selected.

Monster Post

Normally I wouldn’t try to cram a ton of stuff into one post, but I really just don’t have the patience for covering all these things separately, and with the attention they deserve, so I’ll try to cover them in order of importance (roughly). Here goes:

  1. Denise Lira’s show was recently profiled on a local blog. The review praised the show saying, “Through her installation, the space became activated in two ways: honored for its native raw utility and transformed into something utterly otherwordly. … [Her show] has so far been the best art event of the year.” Congrats, Denise!
  2. Our own Rich Meade was also recently featured, this time in the form of an interview (and cover photo) on a new online art magazine called Liz Corday. Check out the interview in their first issue!
  3. For those of you interested in the Sam Taylor-Wood video pieces we saw when she spoke at the High Museum this past fall, check out a decent selection of her full-length video pieces on Ubuweb.
  4. Photos from the Spring 2008 Grad Pot Luck are now online. They are abundantly mediocre, thanks to myself.
  5. Pause | to begin is a “photographically driven publication” which you should submit work to. They will conduct a studio visit if you are among the chosen, and you might be published. Charles Altshul, John Paul Caponigro and Joyce Tenneson are advisers for the project. Deadline for submissions is 4/1/08 and the fee is $35.
  6. I’m going to submit work to the following two places, among others: Museum of Contemporary Photography (in Chicago) and Blue Sky Gallery (in Portland). Nothing coming up, just thought I’d mention them, since, you know, you’re totally wanting to get your work out there now. Yeah.
  7. Oh, make some other suggestions for places to submit in the comments.

Sam Hensley Senior Show

For anyone who doesn’t know Sam Hensley, he’s a graduating senior at SCAD in Savannah. Rebecca and I both know him from the 2007 Summer Trip to New York City.

Dark Sky Magazine features: Lindsay Appel

Dark Sky Magazine, an online art magazine, is featuring our very own Lindsay Appel. They take submissions on a rolling basis, and feature photography and other 2-D artists every week or so. Good news is they would love to see some more work from SCAD. Apparently their site gets viewed by artists from all over the world so get those packages together and be sure to check out their web page.

Time to show how Awesome you really are

Alright people here’s the deal. Three photo grads from Savannah are coming up to Atlanta on Friday to see our wonderful show at the Defoor Centre. Not only that but they also want to meet with us on Friday afternoon to do a nice informal crit. This is a great opprotunity for us to share and discuss our work with our peers from our other campus. This is great practice if you’ve got your 45 this quarter.

Now here’s the kicker, They each need a place to crash. SO if you’re AWESOME and have a spare bed, couch or floor space for the evening show your love and offer it up to our fellow grads. If you have any of the above spaces leave a post or contact me. Lets not let them down.

“The Art Thief” by Noah Charney

My friend, Noah just published a novel called “The Art Thief.” Here’s what he says:

My first novel, The Art Thief, is in stores now. You can find it in any Barnes & Noble, near the front of the store, in the New Arrivals section.

If it interests you to grab a copy, please do, and tell your friends and family. The sales in the first month are the most important, so it would be incredibly helpful, if you are interested.

I also have a book tour Oct 1-12. Go to www.noahcharney.com and you can find the whole tour schedule.

There’s also a video review of the novel at http://www.elladrondearte.com/

Introduction: Karen Williams

Karen is a graduate transplant from Savannah. This will be her second year at SCAD, and she’s spending it with us in Atlanta. Rebecca, Zubair and I met Karen during the SCAD NY off-campus trip this summer, and apparently we convinced her Atlanta is awesome. Photo Awesome.

So this might be a new feature… we’ll see how it goes. But with Karen’s permission, I’m going to introduce you to her work. Here’s some bio/work info from Karen:

“I grew up as an army brat and spend most of child hood traveling from place to place. During this time I fell into photography by becoming the family photographer. I got my BFA in photography at St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX 2006. I’m currently working towards a MFA at SCAD. My images reflect the complexity of seemingly ordinary things found during my travels.”

Here are a few of my favorite images from her portfolio on Facebook:

Seriously, isn’t that last image great?
