Join Chip Simone, Susan Todd-Raque, and special guest Elizabeth Turk, juror of Emerging Visions, as we discuss the outstanding student photography exhibit currently on display at APG’s gallery.

Wednesday, May 16th at 7:30PM at the APG Gallery.

Elizabeth would really like us to be there and support and it will also be interesting to hear what other people have to say about our work.

These events are all basically Mandatory, so be there.

ATLANTA CELEBRATES PHOTOGRAPHY SPOTLIGHTS RENOWNED CABBAGETOWN PHOTOGRAPHER: ORAIEN CATLEDGE

ATLANTA– Atlanta Celebrates Photography (ACP) and the Artist Resource Council of Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia ( MOCA GA) present Oraien Catledge as the next speaker in the Spotlight Series. This series “spotlights” Atlanta-based artists and those in arts related fields who are highly regarded and demonstrate dynamic talent in their field. The artist talk will be held at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, May 2, at MOCA GA. Preceding the lecture, a reception will be held for Catledge at 6:30 pm. Both events are free and open to the public.

Catledge, a Mississippi native, earned acclaim for his “Cabbagetown” series. Cabbagetown is a historical neighborhood in downtown Atlanta that emerged around an old mill. Catledge was drawn to this area in 1980 after learning its inhabitants were in dispute with developers, who would eventually turn the old mill into lofts. Over the next 15 years, Catledge immersed himself in the neighborhood and its culture and became to them: “picture man”. Most of his over 25,000 negatives taken gave an accurate, unpretentious portrayal of the community. His close relationship and dedication to his subjects evokes Dorothea Lange in his images. Due to a significant decline in his vision, Catledge would shoot with an emphasis on emotion and not a reliance on technical focus. Children were often the focus of his work and Catledge ensured that every child had a photo of his or her portrait.
Cabbagetown , a collection of photographs from this period, was published in 1985 by the University of Texas Press. Catledge’s work can be found in the collection of the High Museum of Art and he is represented by Jackson Fine Art Gallery.

Anne Dennington, Atlanta Celebrates Photography’s Executive Director, comments, “Oraien Catledge is a great example of an artist who first and foremost did the work. He created an amazing group of photographs that is now being recognized by galleries, museums, and collectors. His story shows that budding artistic careers can happen at any age.”

Travis Dodd, Operations Manager for Photography and fixer of all problems, has declared Friday, April 6th, 2007 ImagePrint Demo Day (starting at 1pm). This event will be held in room 555A (the main 5th floor computer lab), but is limited to faculty and grad students only.

Greg Gorman is a fine-art photographer who has photographed stage, film and music personalities as Sophia Loren, Al Pacino and Michael Jackson. From personality portraits and advertising campaigns to magazine layouts and fine artwork, Gorman’s work has appeared in countless features and covers for magazines including Esquire, GQ, Interview, Life, Vogue, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Time and Vanity Fair. This event is free and open to the public.

Julian Cox, Curator of Photography of the High Museum of Art, and juror of APG’s current show “Out of the South”, will give a talk at the APG Gallery Friday night, February 2nd at 7:30pm. We will meet at the 5th floor computer lab and leave for APG at 7:15pm.

From there we will drive to Castleberry Hill for the monthly ArtStroll. Following the ArtStroll will be dinner… think of good places to eat.

I just got the info from the APG about Julian Cox’s talk next Friday. Here it is.

Monday is rapidly approaching. The Steve Bliss lecture is going to be accompanied by a Potluck dinner. So far, Steve A. is bringing popeyes. It would be great if everyone else could bring some food and/or condiments as well.

Ideas: Plates, Silverware, Cups, Soda, Fruit, Dessert, Salads, etc. Be creative!

The Photo Awesome Club will host a visiting artist lecture and potluck dinner on Monday, January 29, 2007 at 6:00pm. All photography students are invited to attend and to join the photo club. For information about what to bring to the potluck please e-mail Valentina [vvitol20 at student.scad.edu].

The visiting artist will be Steve Bliss. He will give a presentation on the work from his recent exhibition, “Boys: Captured and Positioned”.

“Boys: Captured and Positioned” is a collection of personal photographs featuring the artist’s sons. The collection shows candid, sincere moments captured without intervention. The images were created using a variety of cameras, film types, formats and digital resolutions.

Bliss has been photographing his sons, ages 7 and 10, their entire lives. The show addresses the boys growth while detailing the Savannah environment in which they were born and raised. Bliss credits his sons as his inspiration, as well as the work of photographer Emmet Gowin.

Bliss earned an M.F.A. in photography at Ohio University and a B.A. in studio art at the University of New Hampshire. Bliss is a professor at SCAD and has served as the dean of Communication Arts since 2005. He was chair of the photography department from 2001–05.

According to what we talk during the last Photo Awesome Club meeting, I’ll be taking care of the food’s organization for the S. Bliss talk next Monday… well, I want to suggest you guys–if y’all agree–to give me a contribution in $$$ an I’ll buy everything. The suggested contribution is $8 per capita.

I made my little research and Publix offers great party platters at very convenient prices (I’ve tried them and they are great). Just drop a line to tell me if you guys agree and I’ll begin the collections process.

UPDATE: We decided on a mixed scheme: those who want me to buy food for them, fine, you can give me the $8. And those who want to bring something along, please feel free to do it but make sure to email me (vvitol20@student.scad.edu) and tell me what you’re planning to bring so we can make sure we’ll have a varied menu.

Julian Cox, curator of the High Museum, and recent juror of the Out of the South group show will speak at the Atlanta Photography Group Gallery on February 2nd at 7:30pm.

APG’s gallery is located at 75 Bennett St NW, Space B-1 in the Tula Arts Center. The Out of the South group show is on view until February 2nd.

In related news, APG is also holding their 2007 Push Pin Show soon as a fundraising event, for those interested.

Atlanta native Jason Fulford will be speaking at Marcia Wood Gallery on Tuesday, January 16 at 7:30 pm. This event is important because of Fulford’s role in the world of photography book publishing/self-publishing:

J&L Books, founded in 2001 by Jason Fulford and Leanne Shapton, has published work by numerous artists and authors including David Shrigley, Marcel Dzama, Gus Powell, Adam Gilders, Micheal Northrup and Micheal Schmelling. The non-profit company has won critical and popular acclaim for its series of accessible and original art and photography books. J&L is dedicated to providing an outlet for quality work which might not otherwise be seen. The output of this small publisher succeeds in displaying both a strong statement of aesthetic from the two founders, and a voracious and inspiring enthusiasm for a wide range of subject matter and visions.

I’ve followed Jason’s work for a couple of years, and I like the show, but I’m especially interested in learning more about his work with J&L. Because this is on a Tuesday night, it might cause a schedule conflict for some people, but I hope we can all make it out.

Photographer William Christenberry will be speaking at the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama on Sunday, October 22, 2006 at 2:30pm as part of a panel discussion with critic Andy Grundberg. The discussion will take place in Steiner Auditorium at the museum. Birmingham is only 150 miles away from Atlanta. To celebrate this retrospective of his photography, artist William Christenberry will discuss his work in a conversational lecture with noted critic Andy Grundberg. One of the leading critics and authors on contemporary photography, Grundberg has written for The New York Times, Art in America, Afterimage, and many other publications, as well as being a contributing author for the new catalogue William Christenberry. Grundberg and Christenberry are both professors at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. A book signing and reception will follow the lecture.
