Denise at Hagedorn Special

Denise Lira-Ratinoff is giving an artist talk specially for SCAD on Thursday August 14 from 6-8 p.m. at the Hagedorn Foundation Gallery. She’s put up a fine show. Her dedication to her craft is extraordinary and her talk is worth a listen. Here’s an interview I did with Denise for Art Relish. I believe she’ll be moving on soon so you should all come out to see her show, hear her speak, and wish her well.

“Reflection of a Man” Lecture

Tonight, SCAD Style Event: “Reflection of a Man” Lecture by Jerrie Marcus Smith and Allison V. Smith
Thursday,
May 15, 5:30 p.m., Events Space, 4C, SCAD-Atlanta
1600 Peachtree St., Atlanta, Ga.

Stanley Marcus was known throughout the world as an innovative marketer and retailer with a refined sense of taste and style. His leadership transformed his family’s Dallas clothing store, Neiman Marcus, into a globally recognized arbiter of fashion. His refined sensibility was also expressed in a very private passion for photography, shared only with family and close friends. Marcus’s daughter, Jerrie Marcus Smith, and granddaughter, Allison V. Smith, celebrate this passion in “”Reflection of a Man,”” a representative selection of the thousands of photographs Marcus shot on business trips in Europe, on vacations in Mexico and during family celebrations. A question-and-answer session will take place after the lecture, and a reception and book signing will follow in Gallery Trois. For more information, visit SCAD Style. To see work by Allison V. Smith, visit her Web site at www.allisonvsmith.net.

Choice Tonight: Weems & Mason Murer

Two things happening tonight, both of which you can attend if you’re so inclined. The first is the Carrie Mae Weems lecture at SCAD-Atlanta at 6pm. The second is the opening at Mason Murer Fine Art, which you can show up to a little late, if you’d like to attend both. I will probably be at Mason Murer between 8 and 8:30pm tonight, and then it’s off to dinner. No meeting at the school officially, ya dig?

Photography Lecture: Allan deSouza - Rituals in Transfigured Time

Wed. Oct. 3

4th floor.

Paraphrasing the title of Maya Deren’s 1946 film, Allan deSouza talks about his explorations of the marginalized body and social space. His photographs, as well as performances, sculptures and “paintings” made from domestic and bodily materials such as fingernails and hair, use humor and forensic techniques to “record” the racialized, gendered body in ways that suggest ritual or fetish. This event is free and open to the public

Christian Marclay

This lecture sounds very interesting. Hope to see you all there.

Wednesday, September 19, 7 pm
Richard H. Rich Theatre, Woodruff Arts Center
Co-sponsored by the High Museum of Art
This event is free, open to the public and wheelchair accessible.

Christian Marclay is a prominent artist and musician whose work explores the space between visual art and audio cultures, transforming music and sound into visible, physical form through performance, collage, sculpture, installation, photography, and video. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear this fascinating artist who, over the last 30 years, has produced a remarkable body of work exploring the gap between what we hear and what we see.

Born in California in 1955, Marclay was raised in Switzerland and now lives in New York and London. His work has been featured in recent solo exhibitions at: Moderna Museet, Stockholm, 2006; Barbican Art Gallery, London, 2005; Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, 2004; Tate Modern, London, 2004; UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, 2003; and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, 2001. It has also been included in numerous important group exhibitions such as Playlist, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 2004, SITE Santa Fe, 2003, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, 2001. Marclay is represented by Paula Cooper Gallery in New York and White Cube in London.

John Harrington Lecture: “The Business of Photography”

Monday, Sept. 17, 6: 30 p.m. reception, 7 p.m. program
SCAD-Atlanta, Building C, Room 515
Admission for students with valid ID is free, ASMP members free; nonmembers $15.

Simply put, the business of photography is time-consuming and often daunting. Not only do photographers need to make great photographs, but they need to stay in business too. John Harrington’s program is packed with information on how to operate a successful freelance photography business; how to determine your rates, handle “no-change” contracts, late-paying clients and debates over rate increases; and how to negotiate better. Considerations when developing rates and resources, designing a business model that accounts for everything from taxes to business expenses, and several techniques for negotiating with clients will be discussed. For nearly two decades, John Harrington has covered the world of politics, traveled internationally and negotiated contracts along the way. His work has appeared in Time, Newsweek and Rolling Stone. For more information, visit http://www.johnharrington.com.

That’s tonight, folks. It should be better than last year.

Sam Taylor-Wood at Woodruff

Sam Taylor-Wood is giving a lecture at Woodruff on Saturday, Sept. 15, 4-5 p.m. as part of ACP.

“As a member of the YBAs (Young British Artists), Sam Taylor-Wood has earned the reputation of being one of the leading new media artists in the millennium. Her work in photography and film examines collective social and psychological conditions within thought-provoking scenarios. Taylor-Wood often explores the divide between consciousness and appearance of her subjects and then further presents her subjects in a manner that displays the discord between the internal and external identity.”

The opening of her show, along with David Hilliard (!), is at Jackson on Friday.
