Exhibitions Proposals at Stokes

I recently spoke with Dayna over at Gallery Stokes. She is currently accepting submissions for shows, and wanted me to pass this information along. For those students wanting to have a thesis show there, see the bottom for her personal message.

Twice a year Gallery Stokes will be taking proposals for exhibitions from emerging artists and curators. This will be for the exhibition periods of August/September and January/February. In both cases the exhibition period begins on the 4th Friday of the first month and ends on the 3rd Saturday of the second month. Each exhibition period can accommodate either one exhibition or two shorter ones. If a proposal is accepted, there will be a facilities fee charged to the artist/curator in the amount of $2000 for one exhibition period (or $1000 each, if the exhibition period is divided between two shorter exhibitions). Gallery Stokes will take no commission of sales during these exhibits.

The artist/curator will be responsible for installing the show (with the assistance of Gallery Stokes’ director), deinstallation, including repair of the gallery walls, and show expenses: reception, signage and postcards, the design of which is subject to the approval of Gallery Stokes.

During these exhibitions Gallery Stokes will be open during its regular business hours of Friday noon-6, and Saturday 1-5. Access to the gallery will also be available by appointment.

Accepted proposals and subsequent exhibitions will be promoted as are other Gallery Stokes exhibitions. The exhibitions will be promoted and archived on the gallery website, press releases will be sent by the gallery, the gallery logo used on invitations, and the gallery will send evites to the Gallery Stokes mailing list.

Gallery Stokes takes part in the Castleberry Hill 4th Friday Art Stroll every month. The opening receptions of these exhibitions will take place on the 4th Friday of the first month of the exhibition period. In the case of one exhibition period containing two exhibitions, the first exhibition will open on the 4th Friday, and the second will have a reception on the evening of the artist/curator’s choosing.

If a proposal is accepted, the facilities fee will be charged two months in advance of the exhibition period. If an artist/curator fails to follow through with the exhibition, or if the artwork is significantly different from the accepted proposal, there will be no refunds.

And from Dayna: “Brett has the info about SCAD paying the fee - basically, SCAD will pay unless the student freaks out and doesn’t do the show, in that case the student has to pick up the tab.” Jump on this opportunity if you’re interested.

House Party (not the movie)

What: A party.
When: Saturday April 26th - beginning at 9pm-ish
Where: House @ 1057 Faith Ave, Atlanta. Directions from L5P are as follows: South on Moreland, right on Faith Ave. (it’s the first light after Moreland crosses over I-20), house is towards the bottom of the hill, on the left, and is yellow with brown trim.
Who: Hosted by Chad Noellert, Jason Kofke, and Katie Falkenberg (residents of said house).
Why: Loosely, a move-in party… more specifically we are simply trying to motivate many people to show up in the same place at the same time for the enjoyment of all.

The nitty-gritty: Party is totally open-invitation, all are welcome, and all are encouraged to spread the word. They will likely be one keg (no charge for beer, but small donations always appreciated), but guests are encouraged to B.Y.O.B. Large front yard, large back porch, indoors as well. Depending on turnout/feedback may become an occasionally recurring event.

I am running a workshop for a group of high school students on Thursday from 12-3 at SCAD.  I am setting up a few different stations, so I need someone to supervise one of the shooting areas.  I would also appreciate it if this person could also shoot some video of the event for me, I will be borrowing a camera.  Leave a comment or come talk to me if you are interested in helping.  Thanks!

Notes from Thesis Exhibition Meeting

This is to those of you showing at Blue Tower Gallery next month. The following are the notes I took during our outing:

  1. Fabric for Jason’s room will need to measure, at minimum 18′9″ x 9′2″.
  2. Everyone is responsible for taking care of their own lighting.
  3. Each participant will contribute a minimum of $50 CASH for food and drinks. Give these funds to Rebecca. Dave and Jason will also be helping Rebecca acquire the food and drinks. Food money due no later than May 1st, 2008.
  4. I (Walker) will be taking care of the design the group show card. I sent an e-mail to all 8 participants with details on this. Please give me cash to cover your portion of the cost along with your image.
  5. Everyone is responsible for taking care of their own individual show cards. I have e-mailed Steve about content requirements for individual show cards and will be contacting you all with more detailed information.
  6. Rebecca is consulting SCAD security about hiring a freelance security guard for the evening. She will communicate her findings to the group.
  7. Everyone is responsible for acquiring their own vinyl lettering their own show. It has been suggested that you go to Signs by Tomorrow on Peachtree St. for getting vinyl lettering. Dave has suggested keeping your capital letters no larger than 8″ tall.
  8. Karen will be taking care of signage for guests navigating the Metropolitan complex, where Blue Tower is located. She will communicate her findings to the group, and each person will pay their portion to Karen in cash. (Note to Karen: suggestion was orange vinyl on white foamcore.)

Important Dates

Show dates are set, however, some of the other dates are not set in stone. Kyle will be consulting the gallery on availability for the tentative dates.

Mustache March 2008 Poster

It’s finished. With 27 participants, I think this year was a considerable success. Posters will actually be made this year, and the size is 13.5×20 inches. If you’re interested in purchasing an [inexpensive] copy, e-mail contact AT photoawesome.com.

However, it is with quite a bit of sadness that I must report the end of PhotoAwesome.com, at least for now. It seems that my host recently charged me an incredibly high amount for “overages”. Apparently we were hit by a hacker and an extremely high volume of spam was sent using our domain. As a result, my host has charged me (personally) over $1000, and locked the domain, keeping me from being able to transfer it to another host. So basically that means that PhotoAwesome.com will go offline one week from today. I’ll try and work it out with them, but they’re not budging. UPDATE: April Fools.

Mustache March Photo Shoot Today

Just one FINAL reminder (I know you’re glad to hear that) about the photo shoot for Mustache March. I’ll be in the studio from 2pm to 7pm. That’s a rough timeline, actually. I have class in there from 2-4:30pm, but will be able to shoot portraits as they come. After that, I’ll just be hanging around. This is a one-day shoot, so if you miss out, you miss out. Anyone with a mustache is welcome to participate (including the ladyfolk).
