This is certainly no big story, just a sad (re-)confirmation for me and anyone else who ever printed on Agfa 111 or 118 fiber paper. I went to Agfa’s web site about a month ago and found the following:
You can’t buy the film anymore you’re used to?
Films, photo paper and chemistry come and go. Quite problematic when they go and you still need some…
Agfa Aerial reaches a hand and wants to look into its wide halftone product range whether some suitable substitution film can be identified. Talk to us - send us a note! Eventually we will need a sample to fully identify the product you want.
Film technology is alive and kicking!
So yes, I realize it’s aerial halftone film… but I get the impression that they either added that after I saw it or I was just so floored by the idea that they might just have paper for me to use. So I wrote them, and asked about both of those papers. Today they responded:
Dear Mr. Pickering
Sorry to say Agfa has discontinued all fiber based papers. The only remaining b/w photo paper from Agfa is called Rapitone M2 which is a multicontrast non fiber paper. It is presently used in the aerial mapping industry for conventional b/w imaging. You can review the specifications at our web site www.agfa.com, Materials, aerial photography. Go to data sheets for Rapitone.
If you must continue to use fiber based papers, there still remains a good selection on the market. Web sites of B&H Photo and Freestyle have a wide selection. Oriental Seagull offers fiber based in both mullticontrast and graded papers.
I hope this will help your search.

I just received an invitation to this opening on Saturday and thought we all might like to go… here’s the link: (walker will probably have to fix it if it doesnt work…)
It’s at the Vaknin gallery, 905 Juniper Street, 7pm!
Want to meet at school around 645pm???
By the way, it’s the same gallery we saw the All Eyez on Me show (so anyone else who signed in when we walked in the door probably also got the same email I received!)
Coming next month (or May, whatever…)
ADOBE CS3
The new software combines elements of Adobe and Macromedia products, Flash/PS integration, the demise (sort of) of GoLive, and providing three different suites for print, web, and video, plus one uber-super-mega-combo version.
And “Photoshop Extended” version incorporates 3-D elements. Imagine.

The Hey Hot Shot! call for entries is out for the Spring 2007 Edition. I mention this because I entered last night and was featured as a contender on Jen Bekman’s Blog, Personism less than 12 hours later. The entry fee is pretty high ($60) but considering who will be seeing your work, it might just be worth it. I didn’t get picked last time I entered, and certainly don’t plan to get my hopes up early this time, but I figure the panel alone was worth the cost.
If you’re in town on Sunday (March 25), be sure to come out and cheer for the runners in the Georgia Marathon.
Yours truly will be running the half-marathon (13.1 miles, vs. 26.2 for the full). Hlee Vang, PJ’s assistant, is also doing the half.
If you haven’t seen one of these very large sports events before, you should check it out. There are something around 17,000 people actually running it, and there’ll be big crowds spectating too. Pretty amazing stuff.
So I’m sitting here in Orange, Texas with no film. I ordered 20 rolls of B&W 120 from B&H several days ago to be delivered to my mom’s house so I didn’t have to take lots of rolls through security at the airport. The package got stuck in Philadelphia because of that storm that hit the Northeast.
Not knowing my packaged hadn’t arrived, I shot up the four rolls I brought along on the first day alone, and there’s very little hope of getting any 120 film in Southeast Texas. I might have to drive to Houston (over 2 hours away) in the morning because all of the photo stores in the area are closed on Sundays (I don’t know if they even carry 120 film anyway!). Did I mention this whole trip to Texas was for taking pictures?
I’m breaching the word of mouth format for this underground shindig, some of you have heard about it. Party at Eric’s house, wooooooo. Bring food or drink or just yourself, prostitutes, whatever. The address is 1660 Peachtree St. next to SCAD, apt 6014. Driving is your best bet to get into the complex. Ring me at the keosk at the gate(Hancock) to get in. This is not supposed to be a group announcement, but I’m feeling rather democratic. I love everyone. Oh by the way, the dig starts at 7 o’clock. Be there or Be square. My apartment is on the bottom level of the parking deck all the way to the back. If problems arise—eric’s tele#678-378-0365.
Saatchi has a “student art” site. It’s been described as a myspace for student artists. It’s got all that stuff, galleries, chat, “friends”, etc. Right now they’ve got a “showdown” going, sort of their version of american idol I guess. Here’s my page. You explore to learn more.
Rich Gere, printmaking chair and professor here at SCAD-Atlanta, will have an opening at Romo Gallery, Friday, March 16 at 7pm. For those of you leaving before then, there is a preview at the gallery on Thursday the 15th from 5-7pm.
However, for those of us still in town on Friday, we should definitely go out. We can meet at the school at 6:30pm. I’m not sure if the building will be open at that time, but I assume it will be, in which case we can meet at the 5th floor computer lab.
So Saturday (tomorrow) is Jeff’s BBQ at 4pm. Anyone want to carpool there so we don’t have so many cars? I would like to and I can drive if we want to meet at school a little before 4? Let me know…. bex
Hey Everyone Tonight (March 01) is the SCAD Atlanta fashion show. Denise and I are going to be shotting the show and some photos we took are going to be on display. It is in the Hub at 8pm
Hey,
Tix go on sale tomorrow for the May 12th show of Ben Gibbard (Death Cab, Postal Service) at Center Stage. I’m definitely planning on going. Let me know if you wanna go and we can buy the tix together.
