The Department of Photography is seeking an undergraduate or graduate student who is interested in assisting in the research that is required for the preparation of an exhibition entitled, Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956–1968, which will be on view at the High Museum in the summer of 2008. The High’s exhibition is planned for 2008, which marks the fortieth anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. It will consist of an unprecedented gathering of approximately one hundred forty prints and related artifacts and ephemera, drawn primarily from the High’s collection but also including loans from important public and private collections. Many of the photographs have never been on public view. The photographs will have extensive captions providing information about the people and events portrayed, and explaining how the images were made and used. The internship will focus on gathering and synthesizing the information required to create the educational materials for the exhibition (e.g. object labels and other gallery texts), and for the supporting publication. Skills and requirements include: mature, directed student who can work independently; good library and research skills; motivation to track down primary resources (e.g. newspapers, microfilm, and oral history accounts); excellent writing skills; working knowledge of Word and Excel.
